This is an opportunity to gather information and really listen to your ideas for the site. Usually, we start outdoors and carefully walk the area and discuss each section. This is also a time for you to share magazine clippings or digital photos that represent plants or a particular style that may be of interest.

After meeting on-site, a proposal outlining exactly what the drawings will include and listing key elements of the design will be presented. Generally, a flat price that includes all work leading up to and including landscape plans, or a master plan, will be provided.

Once the client signs the proposal and returns it with a deposit and a copy of the property survey or plat, work can begin.

The first phase of the design is the site analysis. I will return to the site to take measurements and record the location of trees and major elements.

Each project is very different and may include interim meetings to present conceptual plans before the final design is presented.

After the final design is finished and accepted by the client, the design phase is complete. Construction drawings often include a planting design with a plant list. There are also construction details that include a layout plan with dimensions, and site detail drawings that show specific drawings for walls, columns and other hardscape materials.

Finished plans are handed off to the landscape contractor so that they may use them for pricing. I frequently walk the site with plans in hand, explaining any nuances, answering questions, and making the contractor aware of property lines, availability of electricity, and other details specific to the project.

I meet with the client and contractor while they present their proposal to the client and make myself available for any comments or questions on the design.

Often the client accepts the proposal but with modifications. Sometimes those require minor design changes or coordination to adjust material or quantities. We work together to avoid surprises and produce the best product.

The contractor sends me the final plant list from their growers or nursery suppliers with any proposed substitutions in the sizing of plants or sometimes only a certain variety of a given species is available. I accept or decline their substitutions based on what I know is best for the design and the client. Sometimes I choose to delay planting a certain plant and wait until later in the season to get the exact size or variety that’s right for the project.

The contractor pulls permits, posts bonds, calls Miss Utility, and schedules inspections.

I coordinate with the contractor in the week or so before the construction starts so that I know exactly when to anticipate a concrete pour or planting day, to make sure my schedule is clear.

I may walk the site before or as construction starts with the foreman to make sure they are clear on everything. I often mark trees or shrubs to be saved or transplanted.

I make site visits throughout the process to make sure everything is on track and answer any questions or make last-minute field changes. Depending on the project, if there is concrete involved, I view and approve concrete forms prior to the concrete being poured. I am present for planting installation and can reject plants that don’t meet standards or check to make sure nothing was damaged in transit. I make sure all plants are present or accounted for.

I walk the site with the contractor and client to make sure it is complete to the client’s satisfaction. At the end of the 1-year warranty, I visit the site and verify if plants are in need of replacement.
